Summer Sleep: How to Prep Your Skis with Storage Wax
Discovering Hidden Tasks in Summer Preparation
As the Foundation is taking over ownership of ABR operations, we are discovering more and more things that Eric and Angela have been doing for years to keep things moving that many of us haven’t even thought about. For example, the preparation of the rental skis for summer storage.
To address these items, the Foundation is organizing a number of volunteer work-bees, mostly around trail maintenance and cleaning of buildings. Our most recent volunteer effort was applying storage wax to the several dozen sets of skis that ABR has on-hand for skier rentals.
One may ask, why apply storage wax to your skis?
In short, applying storage wax to skis creates a layer between the base of the ski and the damaging and drying effects of oxygen. It’s always best to apply storage wax to your skis to both enhance the performance of your skis and extend the life of your skis.
Wax On, Store Smart: Your Guide to Summer Ski Prep
Here are a few easy tips:
- Completely clean your skis from both kick and glide wax – using wax cleaner for both kick and glide wax is a good way to ensure a fully clean base
- Use a warmer wax – like a red or yellow – to apply a thicker than normal layer to your skis – waiting for a warm, sunny day can help open the pores to receive a little extra wax
- Store in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and temperature extremes
- Keep any skis straps, sleeves or storage devices relatively loose so as not to damage the camber of your skis
- Consider storing in a ski bag to avoid damage from dirt or scratches
