Nature’s Path to Wellness: Nature Bathing

Missing that Nature Connection? Try a Hike!

Disconnecting from the digital world and reconnecting with nature is a powerful trend for a reason. Nature bathing during a hike offers unique ways to improve your mental and physical well-being.

Nature bathing, also known as forest bathing, originated in Japan. It’s about slowing down and immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of the natural world. There’s no set route or destination, just a focus on being present in the moment. Studies suggest nature bathing can reduce stress hormones, improve mood, and even boost the immune system.

Hiking elevates nature bathing to a physical activity. It strengthens your heart, lungs, and muscles while providing a chance to disconnect from technology and clear your head. The challenge of a hike can be invigorating, while the scenic overlooks offer a chance to appreciate the beauty of nature. You can also incorporate mindfulness techniques from nature bathing into your hikes. Take breaks to focus on your breath, listen to the birdsong, and admire the scenery.

Tips to Get Started

Find a Local Trail

  • Look online or ask at your local park for recommendations. Choose a trail that suits your fitness level and interests.

Embrace Slowness

  • On hikes, take breaks to enjoy the view and savor the sensory details.

Leave No Trace

  • Respect the environment by packing out all trash and following established trails.

So, lace up your shoes, step outside, and breathe in the fresh air. Immersing yourself in nature is a recipe for a healthier, happier you and it may tide you over until the next ski season.
