Embark on an exciting journey into the fascinating world of fungi with our beginner-friendly mushroom identification class at ABR Trails in Ironwood, MI! This hands-on experience is perfect for anyone curious about foraging and eager to learn how to safely identify wild mushrooms in the beautiful Upper Peninsula region.
 

Instructor and What to expect

Led by Missi King, certified in both MI & WI for wild-foraged mushroom identification, you’ll learn the fundamental principles to ID wild foraged mushrooms, including key features like substrate, cap shape, fertile surfaces, lifestyles, stem characteristics, and spore prints. We’ll explore the diverse habitats within ABR Trails, discovering the various types of mushrooms that call this region home. Beyond identification, we’ll cover essential foraging etiquette, safety precautions, and responsible harvesting practices to ensure a sustainable and enjoyable experience. Get ready to connect with nature, learn a valuable new skill, and perhaps even discover some delicious edibles and generally fun funghi!

Saturday Sept 13th – ABR Trails Chalet, E5299 W Pioneer Rd, Ironwood MI 49938

9:00 am-12:00 pm – Mushroom ID 101, classroom setting reviewing the details & attributes to help you correctly approach proper identification of wild mushrooms. We’ll also have specimens of what’s growing currently for hands on identification. Bring something to take notes, eye glasses & magnifying glass to help in seeing intricate characteristics of the samples onsite.

12-1:00 pm – BYO lunch

1pm – 3:00 pm – Mushroom ID 102 (must have Mushroom 101 to attend or other certification credentials). This is a guided wild mushroom identification walk on ABR Trails. Utilizing the skills learned in Mushroom ID 101 you will study samples found during our outing. Your instructor will have scouted the best spots to make the most of our time, show you where different mushrooms grow, what to look for, how to spot them more easily on your own adventures, & provide tips on building your confidence to safely identify correctly on your own.

Mushroom ID 101 Morning ONLY – $60

Mushroom ID 101 & 102 Full Day – $100
