MOVING UP THE HILL

Scott Anderson, Eric’s brother, had the privilege of helping Eric and Angela move from the Farmhouse to the Hilltop House in July. Here, he shares his reflections on the move. Most people will laugh about my choice of the word privilege, but I am serious.

Let’s Look Back

Our parents, Helen and Dave Anderson, moved into the farmhouse in 1968. I was 8, Eric was 6 and my little brother, Jeff (deceased), was 3. The farmhouse was much smaller with three little bedrooms upstairs and a tiny bathroom to share. We had no doors so the heat could better circulate. Eric and I shared the north bedroom for most of our childhood. It was cozy, but we were happy. We played on the original 80 acres to every corner doing things we would never let our own grandchildren do. Later I remember trips each year to Ironwood as my family grew and created new memories at grandma and grandpa’s house.
Dad and mom always talked about building a retirement home on the hill, now called the Hilltop House. In 1999, Eric and my parents did just that, they built it. I don’t mean hiring all contractors, I mean build most of it with their own hands. Eric and Angela later bought the house in 2004 and have rented it to many of you for over 20 winters.

A time for change

2025 is the year for moving out of the farmhouse and into their other house. The new
Operations Manager, Matthew, and his family are moving into the farmhouse and starting a new adventure of their own.

Now imagine, living in the farmhouse all those years and moving in just a few short weeks. Think about doing this AFTER you move out of the ABR Chalet, Wax Barn, and PistenBully Barn in April so you can donate the buildings to the Foundation. That is a huge step-change! I helped Eric pack boxes with rock climbing gear, racquetball equipment, camping gear and more. Oh, the great stories that were shared by my brother. We sorted through boxes of photo albums and ‘slides’ from his Europe work over 4 years at the start of his career. Moving was truly the easiest part.

Now, Angela, Eric, and my wife rearranged furniture endlessly until they were happy it was right for them. Eric and Angela slept in their Hilltop House of 20 years the first time on July 19. This is where they will spend the next chapter in their life. A big change, but a happy one to be sure. Many of you also have fond memories of time spent in the Hilltop House during ski season, watching the sun rise in the early hours and seeing the groomer drive by.

Everyone asks me, “Is this a sad time for Eric and Angela moving”? I say it is a huge
change for them, with sad moments, but in their adventurous style it was a happy change overall.

Eric and Angela are settling into their new routines in the Hilltop House and welcoming new neighbors in the Farmhouse.
